Shop with a Cop builds relationships with youth and law enforcement

December 1, 2022

WORLAND – Local law enforcement agencies are preparing for the upcoming Shop with a Cop event.

Washakie County Sheriff Steve Rakness describes the event as “a way for law enforcement and the community at large to give back to kids that are in need.” The event will be Saturday, Dec. 10 starting at 10 a.m. at the Homeland Security Building at the fairgrounds. This will be the fourth year for the event in Washakie County.

Shop with a Cop aims to establish a positive relationship between local youth and law enforcement officers, and it gives children an opportunity to provide gifts for their families who otherwise would not be able to do so. Kindergarten through 12th grade students from Worland and Ten Sleep schools are selected by their counselors as candidates to participate in the event.

This year, 12-14 kids will be treated to breakfast and then tag along with officers representing the Washakie County Sheriff’s Department, Worland Police Department, Wyoming Highway Patrol and Bureau of Land Management rangers in their agency vehicles to go Christmas shopping at local businesses. Kids will be able to buy gifts for themselves and their whole family from businesses such as Bomgaars, Kennedy Ace Hardware, Family Dollar, Black Sheep Boutique, The Outdoorsman, Hasco Industrial Supply and Blair’s Supermarket. After they are done shopping, all parties will return to the fairgrounds to wrap the gifts.

This event is supported by volunteers and donations; those who have questions or are interested in helping can call the Washakie County Sheriff’s Office at 1-307-347-2242, or visit the office to learn more. Checks should be made to Shop with a Cop.
