Worland City Open provides fun weekend for golfers

WORLAND – After hosting a larger tournament last week, the Green Hills Golf Course saw a bit of a smaller crowd over the weekend as 50 golfers came out to compete in the Worland City Open on Saturday and Sunday.
It was an individual stroke play event that featured a good field of competitive golfers, according to Worland golf pro Nick Nielsen.
When it was all said and done Sunday, two Worland natives would emerge victorious as Chris Bundren would be crowned the men's champion and Sarah Schroefel would come away with the women's title.
Bundren finished with a two-day score of 141 shooting a 70 on Saturday and following it up with a 73 on Sunday.
Schroefel won with a two-day score of 161, posting a score of 81 Saturday and besting that mark Sunday by posting an 80.
After play was finished, a derby followed which placed the top seven gross finishers against each other and the golfer with the worst score on each hole is eliminated until only one golfer remains.
The last man standing Sunday evening was Worland's Bryan Barthelmess while Kate Vail won the ladies' derby.
The derby capped off what Nielsen called a "very fun weekend."
"People seem to like it, it's kind of a low-key, casually tournament," Nielsen said. "It's cheap, it's two days of golf and its fun. You play your own ball ... so it's more tournament style golf and you usually get the more competitive players because they like playing their own golf ball and playing stroke play.
"It's a fun atmosphere. Nobody is real high-stressed."
