Businesses impacted by new landfill fees

WORLAND – As the Worland landfill has begun charging $15 per cubic yard of general waste, questions have arisen about the impact to local businesses.

Businesses such as Roadrunner Sanitation are finding an increase in business and expect to see that increase continue.

“I think that people will see the savings, whether it’s in time, money or effort in just having a sanitation company come and collect their garbage, rather than them hauling it to the landfill themselves. When people see the prices we charge for garbage service, they’ll be excited to have somebody else put in the effort to get their garbage to the landfill,” Roadrunner Sanitation owner Dalin Winters of Burlington said.

The charge for general waste at the landfill is $15 per cubic yard for Washakie County Solid Waste Disposal District residents and $36 per cubic yard for non – district residents. Small tree stumps are $25 each and large tree stumps are $50 each. Grass clippings, yard and garden waste and wood chips are $15 per cubic yard.

Ron’s Sanitation and Sprinklers of Worland is concerned that the prices may impact his costs. “At this point it has been pretty minimal because we are not hauling much but in about a month when the leaves start falling and we are doing fall clean up, I anticipate it to impact my costs quite a bit,” Ron’s Sanitation and Sprinkler owner Ron Harvey said.

Another concern that has come to peoples mind is that people will litter more now instead of paying the cost to bring their garbage to the landfill. The Bureau of Land Management Worland Field Office issued this statement, “Illegal dumping is never ok on public lands. Dump sites often promote even more dumping in the same area and can pose a threat to humans, pets, wildlife and vehicles. In the past, accumulating trash and illegal dumpsites on public lands have required additional time and money spent on clean up, remediation and enforcement rather than higher priority projects. We are confident that people will do their parts to help keep their public lands clean by not dumping and by reporting those who do to the BLM Worland Field Office.”

The landfill will still be taking some specific items for free at this time such as brush and clean wood, batteries, appliances, metal and domestic animals.
