JD Nelson lays out for a catch during Ten Sleep's homecoming game Saturday.

TEN SLEEP – The scoreboard may have read 73-32 in favor of Meeteetse at the end of the homecoming game Saturday, but Ten Sleep coach Andy Ray feels the score wasn't indicative of how well his team played against the No. 2 ranked team in the state.

The Pioneers wanted to stop the big plays against the Longhorns and force them to sustain drives rather than give up long chunks of yardage. They also wanted to go out and make some big plays of their own.

And for the most part, Ray was happy with what he saw.

"The kids did a lot of good things, they're just a tough team. They still had their big plays and that's what they do – they make big plays," Ray said of Saturday's game against Meeteetse. "The whole plan was to make them drive the football ... I thought the kids did a good job of that.

"We also moved the ball offensively. We were able to get some scores and special teams wise, we were really sound."

JD Nelson had 215 yards of individual offense, Quentin Fettig had 207 and Corey Rice had 145 as all three accounted for the scoring for the Pioneers.

Defensively, Nelson had 40 points including five tackles for loss and a sack. Fettig followed with 19 defensive points and Luke Fenton also had 18.

"I thought we played them as well as anyone has so far and personally, I don't know that they'll lose a game this year," Ray said Mondday. "I know they're ranked second but I would say they're the frontrunners. We were pretty happy with being able to put some points on the board and slow them down a little bit."
