Charging documents: Colorado woman stole $50,000 cash from Thermopolis residence

WORLAND — A Colorado woman is facing felony burglary charges after allegedly stealing $50,000 from a residence in Thermopolis.

Rosalee Johnson, 19, of Aurora, Colo., was arraigned in the Wyoming Fifth Judicial District Court in Thermopolis earlier this month.

Charging documents allege that Johnson stole $50,000 cash from an acquaintance before heading to Colorado and purchasing a vehicle.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, on June 28 Johnson visited the alleged victim’s home before leaving in separate vehicles to have lunch at Lil Wrangler in Thermopolis. Midway through the meal, Johnson left abruptly and returned to the alleged victim’s home.

In the affidavit, authorities allege that Johnson admitted to entering the alleged victim’s home through a doggie door. Johnson then allegedly found the victim’s unlocked safe and stole $50,000 which was being kept in a red bank bag. Court documents further allege that Johnson stole prescription Vicodin and Percocet pills.

After allegedly stealing $50,000, Johnson returned home to Colorado.

The affidavit alleges that at some point after returning to Colorado, Johnson took the money bag and began handing out thousands of dollars to homeless people on Colfax St. in Denver.

After about a week, Johnson allegedly saw a black 2011 Chevrolet Camaro. Johnson then opened a bank account at Wells Fargo Bank.

A bank employee told authorities that on July 3, Johnson entered the bank to obtain a cashier’s check. After being informed that she must have an account with the bank, Johnson opened a checking account.

The bank employee observed that Johnson had a red bag containing cash. When asked how much money was in the red bag, Johnson allegedly said that she did not know. She then proceeded to count out $25,000 cash, most of which was $100 bills, charging documents allege.

After opening an account, Johnson allegedly obtained a cashier’s check in the amount of $21,500 which was payable to Auto Nation. Johnson allegedly admitted that she purchased the Camaro with the check.

During an interview with Johnson, law enforcement requested to look at the contents of her cell phone. Authorities allegedly discovered a selfie photograph that Johnson had taken. The image showed Johnson holding approximately $4,000 in $100 bills.

Johnson returned to Thermopolis in July and was subsequently arrested. She is charged with one count of burglary with an alternative charge of theft. Both burglary and theft carry a sentence of 10 years behind bars, a fine of $10,000 or both.

Johnson is additionally charged with two counts of wrongful receiving, concealing or disposing of property, which is also punishable by 10 years in prison, a fine of $10,000 or both.

A plea hearing is scheduled for January 25, 2016 with a trial date set for February 16.

District Court Judge Robert Skar kept Johnson’s bond at $100,000 cash. She is currently being held at the Hot Springs County Jail in Thermopolis.
