Donna Moberly is the 2016 'community angel'

February 5, 2016

WORLAND – Worland resident Donna Moberly has been named this years “community angel” and will be honored tonight at the “community angel” dinner which takes place at the Worland Community Center Complex. The community angel is a person who gives back to the community selflessly.

Donna Moberly learned that she was to be this year’s community angel in an unusual way. “They called me and asked me if I was busy on the 5th,” she said. “I am very humbled by this honor,” she added.

Before moving to Worland in 1963, Donna and her husband Harry lived in Greybull. Her selflessness was evident even then. “I taught tap dancing, ballet and modern jazz to children ages 5 thru 12 and taught Sunday school in the Presbyterian Church for many years,” she said.

After moving to Worland her selflessness continued. She had five children, a husband and a home but still had the time to be a Girl Scout leader and den mother. “I was a Girl Scout leader and den mother at the same time and I also served on the State Girl Scout board,” she said.

Donna was part of the P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association) and also served as president at one time. She served for 15 years on the Washakie County School Board and the Washakie County Recreation Board.

She was the appointed to the Board of Control for the Wyoming High School Activities Association, where she served five years. “I was the first woman to be part of that board and it was evident that the other members didn’t want me in any shape or form. The Board of Control was a man’s world at that time and they didn’t know what to do with me,” she said.

Her husband was a little hesitant about her being part of the board because of this but he stood behind her. “You never do something in volunteering without your husband. He may not be there with you, but he needs to be there behind you, supporting you,” she stated.

Donna helped get the first swimming pool in Worland built and later when there was a need for a new pool, she helped get the Aquatic Center built. “It is important that all children learn how to swim,” she said.

Donna and her husband have been members of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church since moving to Worland in 1963. During those years she has served the church in many different capacities. “I have served several terms on St. Alban’s vestry and three years as senior warden and I am still teaching Sunday school,” she said.

Donna has worked as a volunteer for the thrift shop for over 45 years and now serves on the board of directors for Born Again Clothing. She also delivers meals on wheels for a month once a year.

Despite all her volunteer work, Donna was able to take the time to go back to school. “I went back to night school when I was 50 and earned my Associate of Science degree and my Associate of Arts degree. I got my substitute teachers license and subbed for a couple years until I went back on the school board. I went to school for four years to get my theological education for ministry certificate, which I finished on May 31, 2015,” she said.

Other ways Donna has served her community include: For 41 years Donna has been a P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and at one time served as president. She was also active in the Republican Women and served as president several times. She helped organize Christmas tours of homes.

“We (Worland) used to have a Christmas tour of homes and one year we had a home in Manderson and Ten Sleep along with the homes in Worland, which made the whole experience even more fun for everyone. Eventually though, we ran out of homes because we tried to always showcase different homes each year,” she said.

Donna has been married to her husband Harry for 65 years. Together they have five children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. “The Fourth of July is our family time. Everyone tries to get together here at our house for three days. For those three days we reconnect, and spend time playing and enjoying each other’s company. Cell phones etc. are not allowed,” she said.
