Cheyenne officials considering backyard chickens

March 30, 2016

CHEYENNE (AP) — Cheyenne officials are considering a proposal that would allow residents to keep chickens in their yards.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that the City Council is looking at a proposal that would make it legal to keep chickens within city limits. Cheyenne would be joining a number of communities across the nation that have legalized forms of urban agriculture.

Councilman Richard Johnson says the ordinance includes provisions to limit any nuisance for people on the same property or neighboring property. Roosters are not allowed and people are limited to five hens. They must also be kept in covered backyard coops.

Johnson and Councilman Scott Roybal are sponsoring the ordinance.
