Warriors and Lady Warriors sweep Pinedale on the road

April 30, 2016

PINEDALE— The Worland High School soccer teams traveled to Pinedale yesterday for late afternoon matches and both teams walked away the victors.

The Lady Warriors offense took longer than usual to get going but when it did they kicked it into high gear.

Senior Haley Schneider got her team on the board with a goal in the fifth minute. Thirty minutes later Schneider would pick off an errant Lady Wrangler pass and make them pay for the mistake. Notching her second goal of the match in the 35th minute, giving Worland a 2-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half sophomore Casey Wassum got things rolling for Worland with a goal in the 55th minute and 10 minutes later scored another goal in the 65th minute. Junior Hannah Ozmon knocked in the Lady Warriors fifth goal of the match in the 67th minute.

When asked about her team’s performance against Pinedale coach Danielle Warren said, “This was the girls’ best game of the season. Pinedale played six or seven in the box at all times and even had most of their team on their side of the field. Our defenders hardly touched the ball all game.”

“Our girls adjusted and when Pinedale kept collapsing in the box, they’d make the small quick passes necessary to keep Pinedale’s defense off balance and vulnerable. They did such a great job of attacking and creating for one another, it was terrific to watch,” added coach Warren

Next up for the Lady Warriors will be another road match as they travel to Star Valley for an 11 a.m. kickoff time today. When asked about Star Valley coach Warren said, “They’re a great crossing team, they’ll push the ball down the sides then cross it to the middle. And they look to keep the ball for long possessions.”

The Warriors also played a great all-around match shutting out the Pinedale Wranglers for a 3-0 victory last night.

Senior Miki Ericksen had the Warriors on the board with a goal in the 3th4 minute. Three minutes later Senior Jorge Carmona got by the Wrangler defense for the Warriors second goal of the game, putting Worland up 2-0 heading into halftime. Then in the 70th minute junior Gavin Weyrich shut the door on any comeback attempt by Pinedale with a goal of his own.

It’s worth noting that Worland’s lead could have been much larger as there were three goals by sophomore Bryan Castro, senior Jakob Schaeffer and Ericksen that were waved off due to offside calls.

Nevertheless, coach Ron Overcast was pleased with his team’s outing, “The guys played really, really well. They came out aggressive and stayed that way for all 80 minutes.”

“Our offense had plenty of good looks and we were able to put the ball in the back of the net. Our defense was aggressive in putting pressure on the ball and kept pressing all game. Everyone played well tonight and I’m happy with their performance,” continued coach Overcast.

For today, the Warriors will also travel to Star Valley for a 1 p.m. match. Coach Overcast said of Star Valley, “They’re a big, fast and athletic team that likes to play a physical game. And the team captains reminded everyone that we have to set the tone for the game. They need to match our intensity and not the other way around. That mindset of setting the tone I believe is something we’ve been doing a great job of lately.”
