Track teams prepare for end of the regular season

May 4, 2016

WORLAND - The regular season is coming to a close for many of the track teams in the area and each of one is working hard at getting ready for regionals and state.

Burlington

Burlington Coach Ryan Olson has been proud of his team's progress all season long. "We're a small young team but the kids have been doing very well at making the improvements necessary to get better. We started the season by writing their personal best on a board for them to see and that really seemed to motivate them because we constantly had to rewrite their best."

The Burlington track team is mostly underclassmen but they do have senior Zariah Tolman who defended her pole vaulting crown at the Wyoming Classic Monday night.

"Talking with the coaches there at the meet we were racking our brains trying to remember if anyone has gone back-to-back in any event at the Classic. After some time I think we decided it hadn't been done. Zariah has had a terrific year and for her to win the pole vault again, after all she's been through and all the hard work she has put in, is fantastic. And as her coach I couldn't be prouder," said coach Olson.

Thermopolis

Coach Ernie Mecca's Thermopolis track and field team has had strong showings all year long. Even against the bigger class schools the Bobcats have held their own and shown they can compete with anyone.

"We're excited where we are at and how we're stacking up with state qualifiers. We have a good group of kids, we have a good core group of senior boys and a good core group of juniors girls, so hopefully we can stay healthy and be in the trophy hunt at state," said coach Mecca.

Thermopolis had senior Jules Ward compete at the Wyoming Classic Monday, "For Jules (Ward) to compete for her third year in a row at the Classic and win the whole thing is great, especially coming from a smaller school. Her event coach Brenna Able has doing a good job all year long getting her and the kids ready," commented coach Mecca.
