Lady Warriors bounce back in Douglas

May 17, 2016

DOUGLAS- There is no such thing as nice weather during the spring in Wyoming and the Lady Warriors fought through the rain and cold along with the Lady Douglas Bearcats to a 5-1 victory yesterday night.

It took Worland sometime to get going as the score was 1-0 heading into halftime. After halftime the Lady Warriors turned on the offense and never looked back, outscoring Douglas 4-1. Scoring for Worland were Emily Keller, Casey Wassum (2) and Hannah Ozmon (2).

"I believe the weather had an impact on us in the beginning of the game. That and Douglas played hard defensively and did a good job of shutting us down. They challenged every ball and made things difficult for us," said coach Daniel Warren. "But once our girls got into a rhythm and they started making quick, effective passes, and that's when we started to put some distance between us and Douglas."

Last week's loss in Cody put the quadrant in doubt for the Lady Warriors. But with the losses to Star Valley and Jackson over the weekend the Lady Fillies lost the tiebreaker, making Worland the 3A Northwest quadrant winner. As quadrant winner this secures a No. 1 seed at the state tournament and gives the team the rest of the week off.

Just because they have the week off, coach Warren still wants to see her team maintain their resolve during practices between now and the first state tournament match. "We want to continue with the same tenacity we've had all season. This team is a driven team and they've pushed themselves all year long. We're at the homestretch now, we need to dig deep and grind and grit it out to the end of the season," said coach Warren.

The Lady Warriors will play the winner of Rawlins/Star Valley on Thursday, May 26, 2016, in the first round at the state tournament in Sheridan.
