May 26, 2016

WORLAND – As of Wednesday morning, the candidate pool for Worland City Council and Washakie County commissioner has remained the same with no one new filing this week.

And with seven seats open on the council and only seven candidates there is not a contested race at this time.

To date five current city council members have filed with the Worland City Clerk’s office to retain their seats on the Worland City Council — Keith Gentzler (Ward 1), Marcus Sanchez (Ward 3), Lisa Fernandez (Ward 1) and Mandy Horath (Ward 2) and Dennis Koch (Ward 2).

The only incumbent not to file is Loresa Brinkerhoff, also of Ward 3. Jim Gill (Ward 1) has opted to file for mayor, rather than file to maintain his council seat.

New filers

Jacquelyn Ernest filed in the first week for a Ward 1 seat, and Lucas Cain Torrez was the last person to file for council positon, City Clerk Tracy A. Glanz said. Torrez filed for the Ward 3 seat.

Ward 1 includes the area north of Culbertson from 10th Street to 38th street; Ward 2 is south of Culbertson from 10th street and south of Big Horn from 15th Street, Ward 3 is west of 10th Street. A ward map is available on the city’s website at worlandwy.govoffce3.com.

Mayoral pool

Joining Gill in the mayoral race are Keith McDonald, Jerry Alexander, Jody Thibodeaux and previous mayor Kreg Lombard.

County

For Washakie County, Aaron Anderson has filed for re-election to the commissioners. He has filed on the Republican ticket and is the only candidate to date.

Any interested parties for city and county positions can file at City Hall with the clerk’s office or at the courthouse with the county clerk’s office.

Legislators

There were two new filings this week for state legislative districts. Nathan Winters is unopposed at this time for the Republican ticket to retain his seat representing House District 28. On Tuesday, Howard Samelson of Thermopolis filed for the Democratic nomination.

There is a new filing for House District 26 (northern Big Horn County but including Greybull). Phil Abromats filed early for the Republican ticket. Joyce Collins filed Tuesday for the Constitution Party nomination. Current legislator Rep. Elaine Harvey is retiring at the end of her term.

Rep. Mike Greear (Worland) is unopposed on the Republican ticket for District 27, but will face a challenger in the general election in November with Robert McDonough Jr. of Worland filing on the Democratic ticket.

Candidates for State House and Senate file with the Secretary of State’s office.

Filing period for state, city and county ends this Friday at 5 p.m. The primary election is Aug. 16 and the general election is Nov. 8.
