Lady Warriors use second half surge to defeat Star Valley

May 27, 2016

SHERIDAN - The Worland Lady Warriors took down Star Valley by a score of 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Soccer Tournament and advance to the state semifinals today in Sheridan.

Worland's first and second halves would be like comparing the day to the night. The first half was owned by Star Valley as they outshot the Lady Warriors nine to six and were the more forceful team dictating the match.

A goal by sophomore Casey Wassum knotted the score up at 1-1 heading into halftime.

During the break is when Worland's mindset would change, "Coach (Brianna) Shefferly really got the girls fired up during the break," said head coach Danielle Warren. "She asked the team, 'If the game were to end right now could you honestly say you gave it your all? And if you haven't been giving it your all what are you even doing on the field?'"

"That really got the girls locked-in and ready to hit the field, then we worked on a few technical things like our offense checking down and fighting for the ball after they lost it," said coach Warren.

The difference was immediate as Worland pushed the attack on offense and were suffocating on the defensive end against the Lady Braves. Senior Halley Schneider scored the first goal of the second half to give her team the 2-1 lead.

Star Valley wasted little time tying things up with a goal of their own, minutes after the Schneider goal.

For the match's final 15 minutes the Lady Warriors kicked it into another gear and Star Valley wouldn't be able to keep up. Wassum got things rolling with her second goal, next junior Hannah Ozmon scored her first goal and to eliminate all hope for the Lady Braves senior Emily Keller struck in the fifth and final goal.

For the second half Worland outshot Star Valley 10-4.

Worland will play Newcastle who upset Torrington earlier today 1-0. This will be the second meeting between the two schools. The Lady Warriors defeated Newcastle 4-0 during the Pinnacle Cup in Worland on April 15.

Having won handily against Newcastle earlier in the season coach Warren doesn't want her team to be caught looking ahead, "Every game is a championship. That's how we want to treat this part of the season. Like (yesterday) against Star Valley was a championship, we won and now we need to reset and refocus. What happened during the regular season was nice but it doesn't guarantee anything at this point."

The Lady Warriors semifinal match against Newcastle will start at 2 p.m.
