CASPER (AP) — Wyoming Medical Center in Casper has laid off 58 workers, bringing more bad news to an area already reeling from the depressed mining industry.

Hospital CEO Vickie Diamond says the job cuts announced Tuesday are expected to save the hospital $7.2 million.

In addition to the layoffs, the hospital will leave vacant another 57 positions. Combined, the job cuts and vacant positions amount to 9 percent of the hospital’s workforce.

The 217-bed hospital had 1,125 employees before the layoffs.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports that no nurses were laid off.

Workers who lost their jobs were offered a compensation package and access to counseling and career transition services.

The Casper area economy has already been hit hard by the loss of hundreds of coal, gas and oil jobs.
