Landfill sets winter, holiday hours

December 14, 2016

WORLAND — The Washakie County Solid Waste Disposal District set winter hours and holiday hours at their regular monthly meeting Monday night.

District manager Gene Cliame requested the board allow the landfill near Worland to close at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve day, Dec. 24, and be closed Monday, Dec. 26. He also requested the same schedule for New Year’s weekend, closing at 1 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed all day Jan. 2, 2017.

The board unanimously approved the request.

Cliame then asked the board to approve new winter hours, until weather improves or after daylight saving time in March, whichever is earlier. Current hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Winter hours that will begin Jan. 3 will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Scale report

Cliame provided the board with a positive report of the new scale. He said it is working great and things are running smooth. He said county residents bringing out regular trash have been especially pleased because it is all based on weight and their costs based on weight.

He said lights direct traffic for those coming in and those going out as vehicles are weighed coming in and then weighed again going out to determine the fee.

The attendant on duty will come out and speak with the drivers before they get on the scale to let them know how to proceed. Lights then tell them when to stop on the scale and when to proceed off the scale.

When asked about the possibility of using speakers for the attendants to communicate with the drivers, Cliame said considering the cost and then determining the number of speakers that would be needed (ones on either end of the scale and in the middle of the scale), it isn’t necessary in his opinion especially since things are running smooth at this time.

Board Chairman Travis Fuller added he also feels things are going well with the scale when he has observed people coming and going. “It’s fair straight across the board.”

In other business, the board:

—Approved annual safety bonuses for the employees for no injuries. The bonuses are certificates at Hasco and a Worland grocery store, with the district alternating each year between Blair’s and IGA.

—Approved moving two part-time employees to full time at the current wage.

—Heard a report from Cliame that they compacted 52 bales of cardboard in the past month.
