Lady Warriors go on scoring surge for 71-48 victory over Lady Outlaws

January 21, 2017

RAWLINS - The Worland Lady Warriors (7-3) scored a season high 71 points on their way to a 71-48 victory over the Rawlins Lady Outlaws (5-6) Friday night at Rawlins High School.

Leading the way for the Lady Warriors was senior forward Charlee Townsend who poured in 24 points.

"She was great tonight," said WHS girls basketball coach Ben Hofmann. "We knew she had that in her and have been working with her all season about being more aggressive. She hit her first 3-pointer and got really aggressive from that point on. She had nice moves to the basket, finished well and it was nice to see because she's certainly capable of doing that."

The Lady Warriors also had 16 points each from seniors Bailey Gibbons and Lyndzi Rich; between Gibbons, Rich and Townsend the senior trio score 56 of the team's 71 points. Worland also had contributions from senior Mackenzie Cottrell who hit two timely 3-pointers and juniors Casey Wassum and Saige Jones.

"I think we're getting more comfortable, we've got a long ways to go in a lot of areas but we certainly are feeling better," said coach Hofmann, "We had three solid efforts from Charlee (Townsend), Bailey (Gibbons) and Lyndzi (Rich)and good contributions from our role players. Mackenzie (Cottrell) hit two 3-pointers that were quality timed that extended the lead for us. Saige (Jones) played well and Casey (Wassum) handled the basketball really well tonight. If we can get those contributions across the board along with what we get from Lyndzi, Bailey and Charlee I think we'll be a tough team."

While the team had their best night offensively coach Hofmann wants to see better defensive play.

"I thought we were a little below average tonight. I thought we were a step slow, a step late to our help rotations. Honestly (Rawlins) outworked us to the basketball. They were a lot more aggressive with loose basketballs than we were. It's something we need to work on by being tougher and more aggressive," said coach Hofmann. "We gave up 48 which is around our season average but I would have liked to held them under 40. Credit goes to (Rawlins) they beat us off the dribble and our help defense was a step slow and they hit some nice shots. So you have to tip your hat to them for playing well.

Next the Worland Lady Warriors have another back-to-back scheduled - hosting Buffalo at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 then hitting the road on Jan. 28 for a game vs. Powell at 2:30 p.m.

"We have a lot of work defensively, we're not quick on the first step and we have to recognize that from time to time we're going to get beat, which is fine but that's where our help side defense needs to step up," said coach Hofmann when talking about the team's focus for next week's practice. "Buffalo and Powell are going to be challenges next week and our help side defense is an area we need to improve on."
