Volunteers needed for sandbagging to protect homes on First and Second Streets due to ice jam flooding.

WORLAND -In the early morning hours on Saturday, February 11th emergency management reported ice jam flooding along the Big Horn River in Worland at the Culbertson Avenue Bridge. Law enforcement officials have begun evacuations of people living near the Big Horn River west of Railway, including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and Bridge Streets.

An evacuation shelter has been set up at the Worland Community Center Complex at 1200 Culbertson.

Sand bag efforts are underway. Individuals wanting to volunteer to fill sandbags may come to the Washakie County Fairgrounds beginning at 8:00 a.m. Volunteers should bring gloves, shovels, and appropriate work clothing.

Residents are urged to stay away from flooded areas. Ice jam flooding could cause very rapid rises in river levels. Move to higher ground should you observe ice jam flooding near your location. Avoid driving or walking through flood waters and stay off the ice.

* Ice jam flooding is also expected along the Big Horn River near Manderson, Basin, and Greybull through early Sunday morning.

An ice jam flood warning was issued for Washakie and Big Horn counties until 4:15 a.m. Sunday

The flood advisory for snowmelt runoff flooding remains in effect until 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

River ice is very unpredictable, and may move and jam with little notice. Any ice jam can cause flooding, as the ice dams the river, causing rapid increases in river levels in a short period of time.

People living near the river should monitor the situation closely and be ready to move to higher ground if flooding occurs.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
