Ice Movement Expert Arrives

February 11, 2017

Ice jams continue to persist in the Worland area. The ice jam near the Big Horn bridge in Worland has moved very little in the last 24 hours. Additional ice jams along the Big Horn River both south and north of Worland continue to cause water to back up. Joint efforts continue between Washakie and Big Horn County officials to monitor water levels north into Big Horn County.

One member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with expertise in ice movement arrived in Worland this afternoon, with another expert expected to arrive later this evening.

3 National Guard Rapid Assistance Teams are assisting with the flood efforts. On Sunday responders were able to reinforce the concrete barriers along the river between the 2 bridges, as well as other affected areas. Berm was installed around the structures in Riverside Park on to N. 2nd Street and over to N. 4th Street. To date, approximately 500 volunteers assisted in filling roughly 52,000 sandbags.

Over 100 homes were evacuated; several of those homes have received water damage. City officials and American Red Cross Preliminary Disaster Assessment Teams are working to assess damaged homes in the affected area.

Monday’s efforts will focus on enhancing both berms north of Worland past Crown Cork and Seal and south of Worland in and around Wyoming Sugar.

Filling of sandbags is going to be suspended at this time; however, volunteers will still be able to assist with placement of sandbags. Volunteers should report to the Fairgrounds at 8:00 a.m.

A Red Cross shelter has been set up in the back gym of the Worland Community Center Complex at 1200 Culbertson. The shelter will remain open 24/7 until it is no longer needed.

Displaced homeowners needing to return home to gather belongings can call dispatch at 347-2242 to arrange an escort to their home. Homeowners will not be able to stay in their homes, but they will be able to gather belongings.
