'Big Fish' musical opens Thursday

May 3, 2017

WORLAND - The Worland High School Drama Department will present the Broadway musical "Big Fish" this Thursday and Friday.

Under the direction of Rick Dorn, "Big Fish" has a 25-plus member cast and crew with Dominic Damiano as the lead, Edward Bloom. Dalen Brazelton plays his son and Sariah Durrant is the wife.

Dorn said the play is about a father and son trying to reconnect after the father has spent his whole life telling his son tall tales about himself. Older now, the son, more pragmatic, is trying to find out more about his father and is nervous about what he might find out.

He added that the wife tries to keep the peace between the two.

As a fairly new Broadway musical, Dorn said the audience may not be familiar with a lot of the songs, but two main numbers are the opening number "Be The Hero" and a song near the end, "What's Next?"

Dorn said he selected the musical for the spring production this year because he had the cast to fit the characters. He said the show has some strong male leads and it's a show that lets his seniors shine.

"I saw the show at national thespians. It's a powerful show," Dorn said.

He added that it's also an elaborate show with scenes at a college, circus, a town in danger of going under water and more.

Dorn shares directing duties with Naomi Durrant, who he says has been a "huge help with this show."

The curtains open at 7 p.m. both Thursday and Friday night. Tickets will be available at the door.
