WORLAND - Worland High School senior Karla Gayten signed her letter of intent, Thursday afternoon at Worland High School. Gayten received a two-year full-ride scholarship to play soccer at Sheridan College as well as further her academic studies.

"I didn't even know Sheridan was looking at me," said Gaytan. "I just got invited to a showcase, I did the showcase and after they told me I had a full ride if I wanted it. It was kind of a surprise and I didn't know how to react. I still don't know have to react, it's all kind of surreal."

Gaytan joins former teammates Hannah Ozmon, Shania McGarvin and Casey Wassum as the latest Lady Warrior to sign with Sheridan.

"The Sheridan coach [Mallery Hammer] told me to keep producing because our girls work hard, they give a lot, they're dedicated and everything that she wants in an athlete," said Warren. "I've heard a lot of really good things from our other players that have signed with that program. They have just the best of things to say about her, she's an athlete herself, she brings a lot of intensity and training to the field."

Last season as the Lady Warriors keeper, Gaytan had 113 saves and was named to the All-State and All-Conference teams during her first full season as a starter. Her all-around athleticism is what caught the eye of the Sheridan coach and what makes her such an effective keeper.

"Her agility of the line and position on the field is excellent. She doesn't have the experience that some kids have, where they grew up keeping," said Warren. "I had to talk her into it after seeing her ability in middle school. They were playing dodgeball or podball in P.E. and she threw the ball one way dove in another direction and had another ball in a hot second. From that moment I knew that she had so much potential."

Added Warren, "Karla has a full-ride scholarship that's going to pay for everything she could possibly need. Karla is a phenomenal keeper and I'm excited to see what she can do. I think it's going to be a really good fit for her."

Having two seasons to continue playing soccer, Gaytan is focused on making the absolute most out of her opportunity in Sheridan.

"It gives me another two years to work on my goalie skills and it's something I want to keep getting better at. Hopefully, it's something I can take it further after that too," said Gaytan. "I just want to be a sponge and learn as much as I can from the coaches and players there. I want to see how I can keep improving as a goalkeeper while I'm there."
