Ten Sleep approves VoAg building for school

December 6, 2018

TEN SLEEP – At a regular meeting of the Ten Sleep town council on Tuesday, the town approved a building request from the Ten Sleep school for a new, 5,000 square foot Vocational / Agriculture building, to be located on land owned by the school on West Fir Street.

As indicated by Maintenance Director David McGarvin, the building, expected to begin construction in 2019, would feature classroom space, wood and welding workshops, tool storage, a finishing room and student restrooms.

While the project is still in the architectural rending planning phase with ARETE of Sheridan, bids for the construction could begin as early as February.

The project was outlined earlier in the year by Superintendent Jimmy Phelps, who explained to the school board that the school has around $1 million in the depreciation reserve account for the project. Phelps explained that equipment costs would be minimal, as current equipment could be transferred from the current shop location in the main building.

OTHER BUSINESS

In other business before the council, the town has applied for an emergency state Loan and Investment Board loan in the amount of $200,000 to meet a goal of fixing the town’s sewage lagoon in 2019.

Mayor Jack Haggerty went before the SLIB board on Wednesday to request the funding, after bids for the project came in over the town’s budget.

The town initially awarded a bid to fix the town’s lagoon, which breached its original bentonite liner, in November.

Bornhoft Construction of Riverton won the bid, at a total of $675,225.

Two other bids were received, each in excess of $1 million.

The leak was discovered this summer, and town engineer Lidstone and Associates recommended replacement rather than repair to the facility.

After securing a State Loan and Investment Board (SLIB) emergency loan, the town started advertising the project to prospective contractors on Sept. 28.

The lagoon will be emptied and re-lined with a synthetic liner, sometime in 2019.

Depending on Bornhoft’s decision, the lagoon will either be emptied completely, or one side at a time as repairs are made.
