Three in a row: South Dakota cooker wins 2019 Wyoming BBQ Championship

Scott Creek of Pepsi presents Bob Stanfiel of B-S BBQ Outlaws with his grand championship awards that included local honey and sugar.

WORLAND - While some newcomers to the Pepsi Wyoming State BBQ Championship & Bluegrass Festival made strong showings, B-S BBQ Outlaws of Hills City, South Dakota, brought home the top prize for the third year in a row.

Owner Bob Stanfiel said that committee chairman Dave Paxton and the committee do an outstanding job with organizing the barbecue competition and the festival.

"We love the camaraderie, this year we had great weather and we just love Wyoming," Stanfiel said when asked why B-S BBQ Outlaws keeps coming back each year.


B-S BBQ Outlaws defeated 29 other cookers and edged out newcomers to the festival, Lata-Que, Lysle and Trena Anderson from Gillette, 698.8 points to 688.5256 points.

The overall scores are based on the four primary meats - chicken, pork, ribs and brisket.

Chicken was won by Big Daddy's Backyard BBQ, B-S BBQ Outlaws was fourth, Lata-Que 12th. You Q'ued Me All Night Long won the rib category. B-S BBQ Outlaws was third, Lata-Que 12th.


Lata-Que won the pork category with a perfect 180 score. B-S BBQ Outlaws was third.

Parrothead Smokers won the brisket category, Lata-Que was third, B-S BBQ Outlaws fourth.

The Wyoming BBQ Championship has two ancillary categories, the Mystery Meat, pork belly this year; and sauce.


The mystery meat award is named in memory of former committee chairman Dale Wagner who first added the category to the competition. This year's winner was Half Baked Hippies.

The sauce category was won by Unruly Smokers.

The committee also presents a Wyoming and local high point awards. This year's Wyoming High Point Award went to Lata-Que and Lysle and Trena Anderson of Gillette.

Red Arrow BBQ and Jerrad Scott brought home the Jim Blake Memorial Award this year for local high point award.


Red Arrow was fifth in mystery meat; 10th in ribs; 16th in sauce, 19th in brisket; 22nd in chicken and 30th in pork.

Larry Hill and Rolling Hogs took home People's Choice this year.

There was also kids activities, bluegrass music, car show and a Kids Q throughout the weekend.

Chairman Dave Paxton said, "I think we had a great event. All of our competitors and judges were very happy with the event and love our venue.

He added, "We had a great turn out from the public and truly appreciate the support we receive from our community! Without them and our sponsors, we wouldn't be able to continue this free event."

Kids Q

There were four competitors this year in the Kids Q that was Saturday morning with four local judges sampling the burger.

Bailey Muller took first, Kellyn Anderson second, Jacey Rubelt third and Keegan Scott fourth.

In the Car Show, results are as follows:

"People's Choice" - Guy Brinkerhoff - 1967 Chevy Camaro

"Youth Recognition" - Steve Brown - 2011 Ford Mustang

"Best GM" - Sean Duffy - 1970 Chevy C10

"Best Ford" - Steve Brown - 1953 Ford F100

"Best Mopar" - Scott Richard - 1941 Plymouth Coupe

There were also "Top 5" Awards this year:

Chip Snyder - 1976 Triumph TR6

Shannon Brinkerhoff - 1967 Chevy Chevelle

Larry Jansma - 1969 Olds Cutlass Supreme

Dale's Automotive - Custom Black Chevy Pickup 

Dave Randall - 1969 Chevy Corvette

The committee takes a year to plan the festival and will begin planning soon for next year's festival.
