Food relief coming Saturday, next Friday

WORLAND — Over the next week there will be two opportunities for families in Washakie County in need to find some food relief.

The Food Bank of the Rockies Mobile Food Pantry returns to Worland this Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Washakie County Fairgrounds.

The mobile pantry will be at the fairgrounds from 1-3 p.m.

The pantry has been coming to Worland every other month since April.

The other opportunity is new, with the Farmers to Families food box program coming to Worland next Friday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. at the New Life Christian Center in Worland.

There will be over 1,000 20-pound boxes of frozen meat and cheese to share with anyone who can use it. This program is intended to be for everyone, not only for low income families or those in need of emergency food assistance.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as part of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program Secretary Perdue announced on April 17, USDA is exercising authority under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to purchase and distribute agricultural products to those in need. Through this program, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is partnering with national, regional and local distributors, whose workforces have been significantly impacted by the closure of restaurants, hotels and other food service businesses, to purchase up to $3 billion in fresh produce, dairy and meat products from American producers of all sizes. The program will supply food boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat products and a combination box of fresh produce, dairy or meat products. Distributors will package these products into family-sized boxes, then transport them to food banks, community and faith-based organizations, and other non-profits serving Americans in need.
