Veterans Day activities kick-off tonight

November 5, 2020

Veterans Day activities are set to take place this week, starting with performances by fourth-grade classes from West Side Elementary tonight in the Worland Middle School auditorium.

The annual Veterans Day programs will be tonight Thursday, Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The programs will have two classes in each performance in order to account for social distancing, so please ask your student or contact West Side Elementary to find out which classes will be performing at each time.

According to Worland fourth-grade music teacher Amy Wright, the performances will start with a flag presentation by Worland Scout Troop 45; students will then sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “America.” Other songs that will be sung by the students will be songs passed down over generations such as “My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean,” “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” Down by the Riverside,” and “Simple Gifts.”

The performance will also include a cup routine to “El Capitan” by John Phillip Sousa.

According to Wright, those in attendance will be asked to sit in every other row in the auditorium with their family members, along with being asked to maintain social distancing and mask recommendations.

Ten Sleep School along with Riverside Middle/High School will not be holding in-person performances this year; instead the two schools are opting to film videos about Veterans Day which will include recorded songs. The performances are planned to be put on both school’s respective websites and Facebook pages.

The American Legion Post 44 will be hosting a breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The Legion will also be holding a flag disposal in the afternoon starting at 1 p.m.

The Worland Senior Center will be holding a Veterans Day lunch which is planned from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. but may be changed from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. dependent on the amount of meals that are scheduled to be served. According to Executive Director Wendy Fredricks the lunch will be sponsored by AARP, carryout will be available and veterans along with their families are allowed to attend.

Veterans will be recognized by each branch during the lunch.
