Mass bomb-threat received by school districts across mountain west region

December 21, 2023

An anonymous bomb threat was sent to school districts across the state of Wyoming at approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

According to an article by The Salt Lake Tribune, schools across Idaho and Utah were affected as well.

The threat, making the claim that an explosive device had been planted on school grounds, was e-mailed to over 100 school administrators across the state according to Washakie County Sheriff Austin Brookwell.

Brookwell confirmed that the threat had been received by administrators in Worland, Ten Sleep, Basin and Greybull; Although, in the case of both Worland and Ten Sleep, the threat was sent to the accounts of former employees. This detail suggests that whoever is responsible has an outdated list of people to send bomb threats to and has possibly used it for that purpose in the past.

According to Brookwell, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were immediately alerted to the situation. Wyoming DCI through their investigation quickly found the threat to be noncredible, news that they relayed to school districts within an hour; it was still up to each individual school district to respond accordingly.

While some schools went into lockdown or even called off classes over this threat, locally, schools were largely unaffected.

In a statement made by Big Horn County School District No. 4 in Basin, they said that they followed “shelter in place protocol” and searched the building thoroughly with the assistance of law enforcement. No explosives were found. Shortly before noon on Wednesday, they resumed classes as usual.

Washakie County School District No. 1 could not be reached for comment, but in an e-mail sent to staff and parents they stated, “We take every precaution to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. In response to the situation, we implemented our emergency protocols and collaborated closely with local law enforcement to assess and address the situation promptly.”
