  • Karla's Kolumn

    Karla Pomeroy, Editor|Oct 8, 2016

Thumbs up to Washakie County and Banner Health for investing in the future of the county and in health care for our residents. I was impressed with the new patient wing when taken on one of the many tours Thursday at WMC. The number of current patient rooms is dropping from the 25 beds the critical care access hospital is certified for, to 18. CEO Jay Stallings said they hadn’t been full in using all 25 beds for a long time. He said the new hospital, when completed next year, will have room for expansion, in the event the area grows and t...

  • Mead hopeful Wyoming will avoid more cuts

    Oct 8, 2016

CHEYENNE (AP & Staff Reports) — Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead says he’s hopeful that state lawmakers won’t have to make more substantial cuts to state spending when they convene early next year. Declining revenues forced Mead to cut $250 million from the state’s two-year, $3 billion general fund budget that started in July. Updated revenue projections are due later this month and Mead told The Associated Press he doesn’t expect to see them change much from this summer’s projections. “It may go up or down some, but I don’t think we’re going to...

  • Strength in Numbers: Worland fire volunteers and cadets

    Marcus Huff, Staff Writer|Oct 8, 2016

WORLAND – “Each year, by having a volunteer fire department, the community saves approximately $1.2 million,” notes Worland Fire Chief Chris Kocher, when explaining the attributes of the volunteer and cadet programs. “We [Worland] would never be able to fund a department with one engine on call 24/7, with salaries and benefits to our firefighters, without the volunteer system. We can never get enough volunteers.” With 22 current volunteers and two high-school cadets, the Worland Fire Department holds an Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating of...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police are investigating the deaths of two 13-year-old boys in the Utah ski-resort town of Park City that may be connected to a new synthetic drug found at entertainer Prince’s estate as law enforcement around the country struggles with a national epidemic of opioid drugs. The deaths of best friends Grant Seaver and Ryan Ainsworth, found by their parents separately within days of each other, were initially a mystery. There were no clues as to what killed the otherwise healthy kids, one of whom was a talented skier, sai...

THERMOPOLIS - Competing in Class 3A this season, after winning back-to-back championships in 2A, had its challenges for the HSCHS Bobcat golf team but the team rose to the occasion. The boys team finished third at the rain-shortened state tournament in Powell and junior Hudson Roling is the reigning 3A boys golf champion. Bobcat coach Jacob Smith thought his team did very well this season and was proud of their improvement. "I saw a lot of progress universally with the kids," coach Smith said....

  • Warriors fall in hard fought game against Panthers

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Oct 8, 2016

WORLAND - Friday night the Worland Warriors (3-3) battled their rival the Powell Panthers (3-3) in an important 3A West conference matchup at Warrior Stadium. The winner would take a step closer to securing a playoff berth, while the loser may face uncertainty in the closing weeks of the season. Unfortunately, the Warriors were the latter, losing 21-14 to the Panthers. "I'll have to look at the film to see where we are for next week but Powell is a good team. Our kids played hard and stayed...
