WORLAND - After being notified by email that Double D Livestock of Greybull would be canceling the pig wrestling events due to lack of swine, the Washakie County Fair Board began looking for alternatives to ensure the popular entertainment could still be a part of this year's fair.

Board member Dani Rice was able to find a swine contractor in Wheatland, who could provide 40 hogs for the show, but the board would be responsible for putting on the show, including setting up the arena, getting the bentonite mud and organizing the event, according to Board Member Sherry Walter.

The board is waiting on the contract to make it official, but Walter said the gentleman is providing swine for a few other fairs in the state.

She said Fair swine superintendent Lynn Murdoch has agreed to take on the pig wrestling event for the board.

Chairman Jeff Lapp said Murdoch has run a pig wrestling event in the past.

He said there will be a peewee division for ages 6 to 9, intermediate for ages 10 to 15 and co-ed adult for 16 and older. Teams will be required to have at least one member of the opposite sex. There will be 15 peewee, 15 intermediate and 10 adult teams.

Deadline to enter is 5 p.m. July 22.

With a new swine contractor, however, the pig wrestling has been moved to Thursday night at 7 p.m. instead of traditionally kicking off fair week on Monday.

Walter said there will be limited number of entries in each age division due to the limited number of hogs available. Age divisions may also be adjusted due to the size of the hogs, she added.

In addition to pig wrestling Thursday night, there will be a free Jared Rogerson and the Rodeo Wreck concert starting at 8 p.m.

Lapp said the board is still seeking more food vendors this year, either as food trucks or in the booths in the concession area. He said they have one new vendor this year, the American Legion that will provide Philly cheesesteaks among other food. The Homemakers and Cowbelles have also confirmed their usual booths. Others expected are the 4-H Council and O.W.L. Unlimited.

He said they secured the final open class judges for this year's fair.

Fair books will be available for fair participants and the public at the Washakie County Extension office starting next Wednesday.

The next meeting will be Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m.
