Fair entries holding steady

Show and go option for poultry show

July 14, 2022

WORLAND — With deadline for youth entries in this year’s fair on Monday, numbers are up in some areas and holding steady in other areas, according to Washakie County Extension and 4-H Educator Amber Armajo.

She said beef, horse and poultry entries are up from last year. Swine entries are even, along with meat goats.

There are 29 rabbit entries this year after no entries last year.

There are 64 poultry entries, Armajo said, noting that an entry does not mean a separate animal, but one animal can be entered in several categories.

During the Washakie County Fair Board meeting Monday night, the board voted to allow poultry exhibitors an option to “show and go” if they have concerns about the avian flu.

The Wyoming State Veterinarian office and Wyoming State Livestock Board rescinded any emergency rules for poultry shows at the end of May.

Poultry entries are due at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 25. The show is on Thursday, at 11 a.m. For those opting for a show and go, they can bring them to the fairgrounds on Thursday and take them home immediately following the show.

Dani Rice reported that Ten Sleep FFA Advisor Adrienne Forshee expressed a desire for a “show and go” and Armajo said Chief Washakie FFA Advisor Grace Godfrey did as well.

Board member Beth Shaffer, whose daughters have poultry projects, said she preferred a normal show.

She abstained from voting Monday night.

Armajo noted that shooting sport entries are the same at 53 this year. Shooting sports for the county fair is taking place this week, concluding tonight with shotgun at the Worland Shooting Complex.

Cat entries are down this year (from 66 to 54) but the number of dog entries, as well as participants, has increased this year from last year (nine to 16).

There are no dairy goat entries this year.

Armajo said open class entries are being accepted through 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26. Judging for the open class begins Wednesday morning, July 27.

Open class flower entries are accepted Wednesday morning, July 27 with judging at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Armajo said youth will begin the junior livestock sale promotion today (Thursday) with youth visiting past and prospective buyers. The junior livestock sale will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at sale/pig barn.
