January 26, 2023

Derald Wayne Cheeney, 87-year-old long-time Ten Sleep resident passed away on January 20, 2023 at the Washakie Medical Center in Worland, Wyoming.

Derald was born on March 12, 1935, in Henry, Nebraska, the third child born to Everett Vernon and Mary Inez (Terrell) Cheeney. He grew up on a ranch south of Ten Sleep, graduating from Ten Sleep High School in 1953. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954 through 1958, in the Strategic Air Command.

One of his favorite memories growing up was helping local ranchers move livestock, helping his dad herd sheep and taking a horseback pack trip to Lake Solitude and living on the fish they caught.

Derald's sister, Shirley, introduced him to a pretty young lady, Shirley Irene Francis. The couple married on April 20, 1957, in Lincoln, Nebraska. After Derald's discharge from the US Air Force in 1958, they moved to Ten Sleep where they raised their four children, Janet, Clayton, Clinton and Carmen.

He ranched on the Upper Nowood and worked for the Washakie County Road and Bridge, retiring from the County in 1992. He raised sheep for many years and then started a cattle herd. One of his family's favorite memories from his kids to grandkids, to nephews and local kids was getting to trail livestock with him. He was always up for fishing and hunting, but only after getting the work done.

One of his dreams came true when he purchased property on the mountain and built a cabin. That was his favorite place. Next to that his favorite place was going to Mary's every night for supper and poker night.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Shirley, brother, Don Cheeney, and sister, Freda Skrettingland.

Survivors include his special partner, Mary Roddy; sons, Clayton (Nan) Cheeney of Ten Sleep and Clinton (Jodi) Cheeney of Buffalo, Wyoming; daughters, Janet (Ted) Collen of Ten Sleep and Carmen (Ron) Collen of Buffalo; brothers, Everett (Rosemary) Cheeney, Jr. of Hanford, California and Richard (Carol) Cheeney of Sheridan, Wyoming; sister, Shirley Lapp of Worland; 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
