The Worland Speech and Debate team finished in fourth place in 3A at the state tournament in Cheyenne last weekend, with two team members having earned first place overall.
Coach Rick Dorn said "Overall I'd have to say that I'm really proud of the kids, and that I'm proud of what they were able to accomplish. We knew that it was going to be an uphill battle, so I'm proud that they ended the tournament placed as high as they did."
Chase Johnson and Lexani Damiano both took home the title of state champion in policy cross examination debate. They competed for the title against competitors in all divisions, not just 3A. Dorn said that aside from Elizabeth Bleicher who became State Champion in the state tournament last year, the last time Worland had someone earn the title was seven years ago.
Chase Johnson also was awarded Best Legislation, a student-voted award given for his work in congress at the event. His legislation covered physician-assisted suicide.
Best Chair, another student-voted award, was given to Zach Fernandez for his work as chairperson for his chamber during Congress.
Other placers:
Jacob Durrant earned third place for 3A in humor.
Justice Nelson earned fifth place overall in oratory, and second place in 3A.
Jacob Durrant and Ellie Durrant took sixth place overall in duo, third place in 3A.
Lucy Martinson and Tessa Barnhill were quarterfinalists and fifth place overall in policy cross-examination debate.
Zach Fernandez advanced to super congress.
