  • Hear Me Out...The most courageous 2019-20 NFL season predictions: Outside Look In teams

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 29, 2019

The most courageous 2019-20 NFL season predictions continue and this week’s predictions will focus on the “Outside Looking In” teams. These five teams, provided that there are no major injuries in their division or conference, will be the outside of the playoff bubble. Only one subcategory for this week and it’s pretty self-explanatory. The over/under win totals for each team are pulled from oddsshark.com and the stats are courtesy from pro-footballreference.com. We’ve got a jam-packe... Full story

  • Warriors take second in home tournament

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 29, 2019

WORLAND - Hosting the first annual Ed Cook Classic high school golf tournament at Green Hills Golf Course in Worland on Aug. 22-23, the Warrior golf team shot a 320, 309 – 629 to finish second on their home course. "The boys are close to setting the bar higher than we have seen here at WHS. We have six of the top 12 players in 3A, and it is unfortunate that only five can play at state," said WHS golf coach Chad Rose. 3A's two-time defending champs, the Lander Tigers, won the tournament going 3... Full story

  • Back for more

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 29, 2019

THERMOPOLIS - For seniors McKenna Bomengen and Tahja Hunt it has been quite the career for the Hot Springs County High School cross-country runners. The Lady Bobcat duo, as freshmen in 2016, were contributors to a team that finished as runners-up, with Hunt and Bomengen earning All-State honors. In 2017, they finished sixth and Bomengen earned her second All-State selection. Moving to 2A in 2018, not only did both grab All-State honors, with Hunt finishing second overall, they led their team to... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The most courageous 2019-20 NFL season predictions: The Either, Or

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 22, 2019

The most courageous 2019-20 NFL season predictions continue and this week’s predictions will focus on the “Either, Or” teams. These seven teams can either have a lot go right this season, or a lot go wrong and I’m basing my prediction that things will mostly go wrong for them. The subcategories for the Either, Or teams are Should, Should Be Better, Purgatory and Drop off. The over/under win totals for each team are pulled from oddsshark.com and the stats are courtesy from pro-foo... Full story

  • Warriors considered among the top contenders in 3A golf

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 15, 2019

WORLAND - The Wyoming High School golf season begins today with tournaments taking place all over the state. The Worland High School golf team will see their first action of the season with tournaments in Powell, today, and Cody, tomorrow. "We want to win. We're to the point where we're moving past trying to be competitive and moving on to trying to win. Lander will be there and we'd like to send a message early on to them," said WHS golf coach Chad Rose, when talking about expectations for the... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The most courageous 2019-20 NFL season predictions: The Baddies

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 15, 2019

It's time! The NFL season is a few short weeks away and optimism abounds for all 32 NFL franchises. So what better way to burst some bubbles with another year of the most courageous NFL season predictions. I liked last year's format of separating the teams into categories (Bums, The Jeff Fisher Zone, In the hunt, Playoff Teams) rather than going by conference and division. Last year, I messed up the schedule and had to combine the In the Hunt and Playoff teams. This year I'm spreading it out... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...Action heroes and their like-minded spirits in the sports world

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 1, 2019

I’m a sucker for the one-man army, heist and/or unapologetic action movies, your “Diehards”, James Bond, anything with Dwayne Johnson or the “Fast and Furious” franchise. I just love the spectacle of it all, the cheesy one-liners, how the henchmen, who are usually alluded to being highly-trained killers themselves, are terrible shots, like to attack one at a time and give up their gun advantage in favor of hand-to-hand fighting. LOVE. IT. ALL. Last week I was finally able to see “John Wick 3: Pa... Full story

  • Golf pro Bjorhus settling in at Green Hills

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 1, 2019

WORLAND - When Mike Propp and his Propper Golf Management got the contract to manage the Green Hills Golf Course in the fall of 2018 there was one man that Propp had in mind to become the course's new golf professional, that man is, Donnie Bjorhus. Bjorhus and Propp have been friends a while and worked together for the last few years. Propp was the Green Hills golf pro in 2016-17 and the golf pro at the Powell Golf Club in 2018. Before coming to Worland, Bjorhus was the golf pro at the Legion... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The constant collision of sports and politics

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 25, 2019

It’s everyone’s favorite combination, sports and politics! In terms of ranking the best combos in human history, it goes peanut butter and chocolate, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and at the top of the mountain, sports and politics. (I’m not sure which duo made people’s skin crawl more, Brady and Belichick or sports and politics?) Kidding, obviously, only one of those three doesn’t belong. Worlds collide, and the sports world and political world have been smashing into one another on the regul... Full story

  • Wildfires cruise to second consecutive state championship

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 18, 2019

WORLAND - Leave no doubt. That might as well have been the 16U Worland Wildfires mantra during 16U B State championship tournament in Casper on July 11-14. The Wildfires made it back-to-back state titles as they blitzed through the field, beating Powell 12-0 in the championship game. "The girls played fantastic [last] weekend," said 16U Wildfires coach Dave Coronado. "It was a weekend where everything came together. The girls were focused from the first pitch and would not be denied playing in... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...Column buffet: The dog days of the sports calendar

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 18, 2019

NBA free agency and big moves are wrapped up, the NFL is still a few weeks away from the preseason and the MLB has another month to go before it becomes interesting. We are officially in the sports calendar’s most boring stretch. This is the time of year when “B” Block topics are upgraded to the “A” Block, and may even open most sports talk shows like PTI. So it’s time to bring the column buffet back. IS PLAYER MOVEMENT HURTING THE NBA? No. … … … OK, I’ll explain my reasoning. Seriousl... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 11, 2019

Hats off to the US Women's National Soccer Team by capping the Fourth of July Weekend with ANOTHER World Cup victory. I didn't catch every game live (Actually, the only game I watched live was the Final) but thankfully for the internet it's quite easy to find a playback. All through their World Cup run, what stood out the most was how fun this team was to follow. For me personally, I'm putting them up there with the most entertaining teams in sports, right alongside the '96 Chicago Bulls, '17... Full story

  • Wildfires bats propel them to tourney win

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 27, 2019

WORLAND - It is not how you start but how you finish, the Worland Wildfires 18U girls softball team lived out that sports cliché last weekend in Lander on June 22-23. Playing in a three-team tournament, the Wildfires closed out the tourney on a three-game winning streak as they went on to win the championship. "They got on a streak and there was no stopping them when they got to that point. It was awesome," said Wildfires 18U coach Dave Coronado. The Wildfires started the tournament going 1-1... Full story

  • Wildfires 18U team adding depth to their ranks

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 20, 2019

WORLAND - Depth is an important ingredient for any team and for the Worland Wildfires 18U girls softball team their reserve players have been getting some solid playing time the past few weeks. Originally, the Wildfires were to play in a Green River tournament last weekend but when that tournament fell through Wildfires coach Dave Coronado worked out a one-day tournament against Greybull and Lander on June 15. Coronado was missing five players for Saturday's games against Greybull and Lander,... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The winners and losers of the NBA

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 20, 2019

The NBA has had a BUSY week and there are still moves to be made during this offseason. But for this week's column let's look at the winners and losers in the league in the past week. WINNER: TORONTO RAPTORS For the first time ever, the NBA title resides with the Raptors and in Canada. That's awesome. The Raptors brought home the championship by beating an All-Time great dynasty. Their Finals win is also going to give teams around the league that much more motivation. In a league dominated by dy... Full story

  • Worland goes undefeated in first full week of action

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 13, 2019

WORLAND - Last week was a strong week for the Worland Baseball 14U team as they did not drop a single game. First was their home doubleheader against Cody on June 4 in which they won 8-4 and 21-1. Closing out the week Worland traveled to Powell for a American Legion C tournament where they battled through tough weather to go a perfect 4-0. "The weather was horrible, we lucked out for most of Friday but Saturday it felt like winter," said Worland Baseball 14U coach Jerry Leyva. "All in all it... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...NBA Finals Game 5 thoughts

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 13, 2019

Getting this out of the way first, it stinks that Kevin Durant got hurt and is not only done for the remainder of the NBA Finals but also all of next season as well. And as is accustom in this day and age, everyone is looking to heap blame on someone. Warrior's president of basketball operation Bob Meyers already took responsibility for having Durant out there. And since he did that we can just move on, anything else feels like piling for piling on sake. It's not like Meyers held KD's family... Full story

  • Worland 14U baseball starts summer with 8-3 win over Lovell

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 6, 2019

WORLAND - Starting their summer with an 8-3 win over Lovell on May 29, the Worland 14U boys baseball team get their season started just as they liked. Isaiah Leyva got the win from the mound while Jorey Anderson came in for relief and Jerry Leyva Jr. closed out the game. "He closed it out with no problem and did it on very few pitches," said Worland 14U coach Jerry Leyva Sr. In late March Worland went down to Las Vegas to compete in a tournament there, but since then they have had little time... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The crazy, yet entertaining fall of the Lakers

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 6, 2019

After watching the Golden State Warriors knot the NBA Finals up at 1-1 Sunday, it'd be easy to write another column (I think this will be my 100th or close to it, either I should be able to cash in my punch card) detailing how amazing this team and how they make everything look so easy. I'll resist the temptation this week because, honestly, there's another NBA story I've enjoyed just as much as the Warriors dominance, that story being the implosion of the Los Angeles Lakers. I try to stay even... Full story

  • HSCHS track looking to big things next season

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 30, 2019

THERMOPOLIS - The Wyoming track and field season came to an end with the state meet on May 18 in Casper, and while it took a few weeks to get to full strength the Hot Springs County High School Bobcats and Lady Bobcats capped it off on a promising note. "The weather wasn't stellar but the kids were troopers and didn't let it get the better of them. All of them went out and gave it their best effort, they endured. I was really pleased that we got so many up on the podium," said HSCHS track and... Full story

  • Carver signs LOI to golf for Cottey College

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 30, 2019

WORLAND - Recently graduated Worland High School senior Rachael Carver signed her letter of intent on May 28 to continue her education and golf for Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. Golf was not at the forefront of Carver's drives when looking for a college but once Cottey offered her to a scholarship to play golf for them, she gladly accepted. "It's a P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) college, my mom is actually a part of P.E.O. and it just kind of worked out that I found it,"... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...Recapping the 2018-19 high school sports season

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 30, 2019

I haven't recapped the high school athletic season for a column yet, which is a huge oversight on my part. Having an annual guaranteed column idea is immensely valuable, of course, going over the year's athletic highlights is more important than Hear Me Out column topics, but still nice to have a guaranteed annual column. My narcissism aside, it was another eventful 2018-19 high school sports season. The athletes in Ten Sleep, Thermopolis and Worland achieved so much this school year and there's... Full story

  • Lady Pioneers finish second at state

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 23, 2019

TEN SLEEP - For the second consecutive season, the Ten Sleep Lady Pioneers finished second as a team at the 1A State track and field meet in Casper on May 16-18. It was a terrific sendoff for Ten Sleep seniors Kinley Erickson and Kelli Holiday, the latter of which ends her career with 14 state championship medals. Holiday's 14 state championship medals ranks her second All-Time among Wyoming's most decorated female athletes. Mountain View's Amber Henry is Wyoming's most decorated female athlete... Full story

  • Lady Warriors have a bright future ahead

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 23, 2019

WORLAND - Going 1-2 at the 3A State girls soccer tournament, on May 16-18 at Jackson Hole High School, was not how the Worland Lady Warriors were expecting to end their season but sometimes soccer gods are unforgiving. The Lady Warriors got the state tournament started off with a 1-0 win over Douglas in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they faced the two-time, and eventually three-time, defending state champion Cody Fillies. Worland gave Cody their toughest match of the entire tournament... Full story
